FXX has managed to snag the rights for reruns of Fox's The Simpsons and the online streaming rights.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the long-running cartoon comedy has only ever been reshown on local televisions due to contractual obligations. However, 20th Century Fox Television recently renegotiated deals with TV stations and managed to eliminate the exclusivity aspect of the deal.

Though FXX is owned by parent company 21st Century Fox, it is said that there was a "vigorous bidding war" for the rights and the sale is reportedly the biggest ever. It was rumored that before the sale, that Fox wanted around $1.5 million per episode and FXX has the rights for at least 500 episodes.

USA Today reports that FXX will be able to air every season, except the current one, which will have to wait until after the season ends.

The Simpsons is "indisputably one of the greatest shows in television history," FX Networks chief John Landgraf said. The rights deal was "a very long, hard and complicated negotiation.

The Simpsons is currently in the middle of the shows 25th season and new episodes can be seen on Sundays on Fox.
