Amazon's original series Alpha House focuses on four Republican senators and creator Garry Trudeau says it's because Republicans are "much more interesting."
The Doonesbury cartoonist spoke with USA Today about the series and said, "The Republicans are a much more interesting story to tell."
Trudeau continued, "The crisis of identity the party is going through right now ... is just a very interesting story to get involved in." The cartoonist quipped, "Our hope is they'll be the four most likable Republicans in the country."
John Goodman plays Gil John Biggs on the show and Trudeau said he was based off Fred Thompson. Mark Consuelo's character Andy Guzman is similar to Marco Rubio, but "the main difference being that by all accounts Rubio has a different home life."
In a press release Thursday, Amazon announced that Alpha House was the most watched online streaming show on the website since the first three episodes premiered for free last Friday.
"The Amazon Studios process is designed to use data and feedback from customers to help us create and launch shows [customers] will love," director of Amazon Studios Roy Price said. "It is incredibly rewarding to see that process working--customers loved the pilot and we're getting the same reaction to the series. We're excited to introduce Betas later this week."
Alpha House, starring Goodman, follows four senators who share a house while living in Washington, D.C.
