This week on Glee, both Ohio and New York had some Lady Gaga and Katy Perry Face-offs as everyone tried to strengthen their weaknesses.

NEW YORK:
Kurt has convinced Santana and Dani to join his band, but Rachel has declined due to Funny Girl rehearsals. At auditions, only one person shows up—Starchild, a.k.a. Adam Lambert. And in his full glory, he performs ”Marry the Night”. Santana and Dani love him, but Kurt turns him away unless he is willing to tone down his look.

Back at the apartment, Rachel asks Kurt why he turned Starchild down and Kurt reveals that he wants some mainstream success too because he’s sick of being the fabulous sidekick. Rachel convinces him to let Starchild join—but Kurt doesn’t know how to reach him

Luckily, Starchild shows up at the diner, only now he is Elliott, an NYU student hailing from Paramus New Jersey. The two talk and Kurt officially invites him to join the band.
Back at the apartment again they are trying to come up with a name when Rachel comes in and suggests the Pamela Landsbury’s. Her suggestion gets her in the band as well and they finish off the episode singing Katy Perry’s “Roar.”

LIMA:
Meanwhile the new directions are dealing with a new threat at nationals, known as throat explosion. The news inspires the week’s Katy vs. Gaga lesson as the group splits up. Those who identify as Katy Perry types (Ryder Blaine Artie Sam and Marley) will perform a Gaga number, while those who identify as Gaga’s Tina Jake Unique and Kitty) will perform a Katy Perry number.

Sam is still trying to win Penny over, and thinks going dark and edgy gaga is the way to do it. Elsewise, Bree is trying to break up Marley and Jake as part of the attempt to mess with the club, which freaks Marley out because she solely identifies as a wholesome girl—a Katy. Bree however is full Gaga—edgy, like Jake. Marley’s lack of comfort with the budding friendship between Jake and Bree causes her to sabotage her gaga performance by still dressing like Katy Perry. The move gets her suspended by Schu however. Later on, she and Jake get into a fight after she stops a make-out session because she doesn’t want to feel pressured into anything further. Jake then seeks out Bree for ‘private’ time—he may have cheated.

Sam realizes Penny is actually more like who he really is, and the two begin dating as the “Katy’s” perform a stripped down version of “Roar”. After the lesson wraps up though, Sue drops a bomb on them—she’s still trying to destroy them, and as a result they are all suspended for a week because their costumes violate dress code.

Next week: The Glee Club takes on twerking, while Rachel and Kurt get tattoos
