ABC’s Good Morning America co-anchor Amy Robach has announced she will undergo a double mastectomy this week after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Robach found out she had breast cancer after she got an on-air mammogram as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month coverage last month. She was diagnosed during a post-show check-up.
On Monday, Robach told viewers "I've decided to be very aggressive. ... I'll have reconstructive surgery,” Daily News reports.
She also wrote in an ABC News health blog about getting the on-air mammogram, “That day, when I was asked to do something I really didn’t want to do, something I had put off for more than a year, I had no way of knowing that I was in a life-or-death situation.”
Robach added, “I got lucky by catching it early, and there are so many people to thank for making sure I did. Every producer, every person who urged me to do this, changed my trajectory.”
Robach is married to Melrose Place star Andrew Shue. Between the couple, they have five children from previous marriages.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, Robach will undergo a “bilateral mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery.”
