Robinson Cano was a highly coveted free agent who chose to sign with Jay-Z. Now it appears that Jay-Z whose real name is Shawn Carter, who is a Hip Hop mogul and Cano’s sport agent may have may have not followed rules on what kinds of gifts are allowed from agents to clients.
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported that the Major League Baseball Players Association is investigating Jay-Z for giving Cano a gift for his 31st birthday in Belgium. The fancy gift appeared to be a $33,990 watch made of 18 carat yellow gold.
From what Crasnick reports, it seems that Jay-Z may have not fully understood some of these rules or may have missed them and he could be in trouble if found guilty for breaking these rules.
“Section 5(B)(5)(a) of the Players Association regulations states: No Player Agent or Applicant shall provide, cause to be provided or promise to provide, any money or any other thing of value to any player, or any person related to or associated with such player, the purpose of which is to induce or encourage such player to use or continue to use any person's or firm's services as a Player Agent, Representative, or Draft Advisor,” Crasnick wrote.
Crasnick also added: “There is a clause allowing certain gifts if the player was already a client of the agent; however, any gift exceeding $500 must be disclosed to the union in writing. Players Association officials say the seven paragraphs of rules are meant to ensure that players choose their representatives on merit rather than what the union calls "improper inducements. Sources said that the Players Association has interviewed several of the principals and that Jay Z could be subject to unspecified discipline if he is found in violation.”
Robinson Cano posted a picture of the watch on his Instagram account.
According to Page Six the watch is a limited edition Shawn Carter Classic Fusion watch by Hublot and was given to Cano on his birthday party on Oct. 22nd. Jay-Z actually helped design the watch, and performed in a concert in Antwerp, Belgium the night before for his Magna Carta Tour.
Cano, left Scott Boras’ agency in April to sign with Carter’s Roc Nation Sports Agency, which also includes Kevin Durant, Victor Cruz and Geno Smith.
