The actor's Leonard DiCaprio Foundation has awarded the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) grants totaling $3 million.
The grants are going to the WWF to help it protect and rebuild the tiger population in Nepal, The Associated Press reports.
The WWF will put the money towards helping Nepal increase anti-poaching patrols, as well as helping protect and restore lion habitats. DiCaprio said that he was "hopeful" the $3 million will help "exceed the goal" of doubling Nepal's tiger population. The goal is to double to the population by the Chinese Year of the Tiger in 2022.
The Inception actor released a statement saying, "Time is running out for the world's remaining 3,200 tigers, largely the result of habitat destruction and escalating illegal poaching," reports ET Online.
"WWF, the government of Nepal and local communities are on the front lines of this battle and I am hopeful this grant will help them exceed the goal of doubling the number of these noble beasts in the wild."
The actor is on the WWF board and created his Foundation to help support organizations and initiatives that aim to help build a sustainable future.
Leonardo DiCaprio can be seen in the upcoming Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street out in theaters Christmas Day.
