The dour former singer of The Smiths has lashed out at President Barack Obama and the tradition of pardoning a turkey for Thanksgiving.
In news not shocking to anyone, Morrissey is not a fan of Thanksgiving, or "Thankskilling" as he writes, Rolling Stone reports. He rails against the pardoning tradition, calling it "embarrassingly stupid."
He continues, "Please ignore the abysmal example set by President Obama who, in the name of Thanksgiving, supports torture as 45 million birds are horrifically abused; dragged through electrified stun baths, and then have their throats slit. And President Obama laughs. Haha, so funny!"
According to New York Daily News, Morrissey continued his blog rant saying, "As Ingrid Newkirk from PETA points out, turkey 'meat' is one of 'our nation's top killers,' causing heart attacks and strokes in humans due to saturated animal fats and cholesterol."
The singer finished the post by saying that participating in the pardon, it "is open support for a viciously cruel and environmentally irresponsible industry."
Rolling Stone notes that the tradition seemed to start in 1989 when George H.W. Bush pardoned a turkey. Since 1947, every year a turkey is presented to the president. John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan both spared one during their terms.
