New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been elected for a second term on Tuesday, edging out Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.

The re-election fuels rumors he could be running for president in 2016, but he remains tight-lipped about it.

According to The AP, Buono told reporters she called Christie after the results were in to congratulate him on the win. She said, "when it comes down to it, we're just two parents who want to see the best for our children's future."

The Republican governor won over New Jersey for a second term in a mostly Democratic state; President Obama easily won it in 2012.

In an interview with CNN on Tuesday before the results were announced, Christie said "This race has been to at least get to 50% plus one, then anything above that gravy. That's a historical achievement. In 25 years, no one's done that in New Jersey. So, I'll be happy with that." George H. W. Bush it in 1988.

Christie did just that, garnering 61 percent of the vote.
