Oprah Winfrey raised over $600,000 for charity in her massive “yard sale” Saturday at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. The media mogul auctioned off hundreds of personal belongings from her five homes.
Winfrey announced the event last month. The Oprah Winfrey Collection featured antiques, furniture, art, and memorabilia of the former talk show queen. Because of Winfrey’s immense popularity, many items sold well above their estimated price.
Winfrey’s TV Guide cover photo was estimated for $200 to $400, but sold for $3,000, the Los Angeles Times reports. Two shadeless crystal lamp bases estimated at $300 to $500 went for a whopping $6,000.
The highest selling item was a set of six 18th century Louis XVI armchairs. The hand-embroidered pieces sold for $60,000 or 10 percent of the auction’s total gross.
As her items sold to the highest bidder, Winfrey tweeted “Had so much fun at the auction which is still going on.”
The auction’s incredible earnings will go to the Oprah Winfrey Academy Foundation College Fund, which helps graduates from Winfrey’s South African high school go to college.
The exact earnings from the auction will be released Monday.
