Almost Human is a new sci-fi series that will premiere this Sunday on Fox.
According to The Atlantic Wire, Almost Human is set only 35 years in the future—far enough that there is some impressive new technology, but not so far that life as we know it has completely changed. Los Angeles, the city where this series takes place, is crime-ridden and dangerous. So dangerous, in fact, that each LAPD officer is paired with an android.
Distrustful loner cop John Kennex isn’t happy when he wakes up from a coma and returns to work, only to find that he’s been assigned an android. This android, named Dorian, is an older model, meaning that he has human-like emotions—a characteristic that was discontinued in newer models of robots.
According to The New York Times, the pilot episode revolves around Kennex’s backstory, which includes the fact that he is the only surviving member of a squad that was ambushed two years ago. He struggles with survivor’s guilt as he tries to recover memories he lost as a result of the ambush and the two year coma that followed it.
Thus far, Almost Human is receiving mixed reviews on the quality of the pilot episode. The LA Times claims that the show is going over old territory, including human distrust of synthetics and the loner cop’s distrust of his new partner.
Almost Home stars Karl Urban as John Kennex and Michael Ealy as Dorian. The cast also includes Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Crook, Minka Kelly, and Michael Irby.
The series premiers Sunday at 8 pm and the second hour will be on Monday at 8pm. Let us know what you think in the comments below! Is this show unoriginal, or is it a new twist on a classic storyline?
