Lorna discovers that Sean lets Ellie get away with not doing her chores, and lectures him on the importance of not allowing children to walk all over their parents. Sean tells Ellie that she must make dinner that night or not be allowed to attend her ski trip that weekend.
Meanwhile, when Max overhears Sean allowing Hunter to leave work early Friday to attend his band's gig, he too lectures Sean on the importance of not letting employees walk all over supervisors. Much to Sean's displeasure, Max makes a bet with Sean that he could get Hunter to change his mind about leaving early Friday and decide to work all that weekend.
Ellie arrives home late and attempts to pass off canned soup as dinner. Sean felt like the ground rules weren't laid down for Ellie, so he decides to give her one more chance. The next evening, Sean arrives home and sees that Ellie and dinner are nowhere to be found. Ellie walks in and explains she had to comfort an upset friend. Sean sternly tells Ellie she cannot go on her trip, but to his surprise she agrees, mentioning she did not wish to have an argumentive relationship that her friend and her mother has. Sean is so impressed with Ellie's maturity that he allows her to go on her ski trip.
Before Lorna arrives, Sean attempts to pass off Greek delivery as homemade, but Lorna is not fooled. Sean informs Lorna that he knows what is best for Ellie and will parent how he is comfortable doing so.
The next day at work, Max's mind games he has been playing on Hunter seem to have had the desired effect. Hunter accuses Sean of attempting to get him fired. As a result of losing the bet, Sean has to say one mean truth to everyone in the office, but decides to only give one--to Max---who then decides to end the meeting quickly after realizing how hurtful his idea was.
