Former The Office star Steve Carell is returning to television in force, but this time behind the camera. Carell has signed on to write and direct a comedy pilot for TBS called Tribeca.
The satirical police comedy comes from an idea hatched by Carell and his wife, Nancy Carell. According to Variety, it will be produced by the comedian’s Carousel Television. The two will co-write, while Carell will direct.
Tribeca’s title character is Angie Tribeca, a veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Really Heinous Crimes Unit (RHCU). The unit will stop at nothing to solve their cases, but often reveal too much about their own lives along the way, which doesn’t help justice get served.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that this is the latest pilot for TBS, which has not stopped adding original programming around its The Big Bang Theory and Family Guy repeats. Bill Engvall’s Do It Yourself and an untitled pilot from Hot Tub Time Machine’s Josh Heald are also in the works. Ground Floor from Bill Lawrence is the newest series for TBS.
Carell’s Carousel is also producing Slide Show, an unscripted comedy that will feature comedians. He will next be seen in Anchorman: The Legend Continues.
Nancy Carell is an experienced writer, having worked on Saturday Night Live and The Office, and appeared in Bridesmaids.
