Everyone English teacher's favorite epic Old English poem, Beowulf, is being developed into a drama series for Syfy.
Deadline reports that Matt Greenberg has been tapped to pen the script. Omni will produce and co-distribute with Universal Cable Prods. Greenberg, Brian Hamilton, Andrew Cosby, Michael Chechik and Paulo de Oliveira are all stepping in to executive produce.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama adaptation will look at Beowulf’s rise to power and his fight and struggle with Grendel.
The Old English epic has been adapted to the screen several times with the most recent versions being a 2007 Syfy TV movie, Grendel, and the Gerard Butler CG-fest Beowulf & Grendel in 2005.
Syfy is also working on developing several other shows and movies, such as 12 Monkeys and Dominion. Both are essentially adaptations of films. 12 Monkeys is based off the Terry Gilliam directed time travel movie, which starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. The series has started casting. The other show, Dominion, is a different take on the 2010 film Legion.
The network is also developing two TV movies, Horizon and High Moon and a Jamie Foxx horror anthology series.
