The American Music Awards aired on ABC last night, and some of the most popular musical performers lit up the stage. The awards show was a complete blast to watch, and the performances ranged far and wide from country singers Florida Georgia Line to pop sensations One Direction.
The annual awards show was a spectacular night full of memorable performances, including a surprisingly tame performance of “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, and a Saturday Night replay of Lady Gaga and R-Kelly’s “Do What U Want.”
The big winners of the evening included Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, and Florida Georgia Line. All winners at the AMA’s are fan-picked giving artists the opportunity to connect with their audiences and fans the chance to have their voices heard. Rhianna was also presented with a special honor, winning the first ever Icon Award presented to her by her mother Monica Fenty.
Though not all the artists featured in the top 5 best performances were winners, all of them made the night especially memorable with their entertaining and inspiring vocal performances. Here are the top 5 best performances of the 2013 American Music Awards.
5) One Direction
One Direction’s performance of “Story of My Life” was surprising and extremely impressive. The new song is unlike many of their anthem-esque pop numbers and gave the boy band more depth. The performance showcased each of the member’s voices, giving each the opportunity to solo. Harry Styles and his mussed hair solidified his role as group leader on stage last night, giving a fantastic vocal performance.
4) Katy Perry
Katy Perry put on an elaborate performance as always with an Asian inspired, Geisha edition of “Unconditionally.” Katy Perry manages to visually entertain without distracting from her insane vocal talent. Intricate set design and costuming is one of Perry’s signature stylistic moves and she continues to wow crowds with her creativity and artistic range.
3) Imagine Dragons
Imagine Dragons gave an energized, amazing performance at the AMA’s. Vocally, they were on point and as always instrumentally the performance was electric. Every aspect of the “Radioactive” performance was perfection. Imagine Dragons proves it’s not always about the frills, good music will suffice.
2)TLC & Lil Mama
20 years later and the girl group’s still got it. I hold TLC in a special cavity in my heart, but I have to say regardless of my personal bias TLC still killed it. The twosome was accompanied by Lil Mama who performed the late Left Eye’s rap. The three ladies were a time machine back to the ‘90s when the band was at height of their career.
1)Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande started her performance with an a cappella intro of “The Way” which showcased her vocal power. The singer then transitioned into “Tattooed Heart” a dreamy number from her recent album. Her performance proved her newly acquired popularity worthy, the young star is budding with potential for a full career. Grande has been referred to as the new Mariah Carey.
