Tina Turner is relinquishing her United States citizenship and she will now be a Swiss citizen after living there for almost 20 years. The music legend, who retired from touring in 2009, married her partner of 27 years in July, German music producer Erwin Bach.
Turner, 73, signed the “Statement of Voluntary Relinquishment of U.S. Citizenship under Section 349 (a)(1) of the INA” on Oct. 24 after taking an oath of Swiss nationality on April 10.
According to The Washington Post, in the report filed with the U.S. Embassy in Bern, Switzerland, she stated she has no ties to the U.S. anymore “except for family, and has no plans to reside in the United States in the future.”
The “Proud Mary” singer is not formally giving up her U.S. citizenship, which is a more complicated process. She’s “relinquishing” it, “but took Swiss citizenship with the intent to lose her U.S. citizenship,” said a source.
Turner and Bach tied the knot in Switzerland in a civil ceremony at the registry office in Kuesnacht, a suburb of their home of Zurich.
