One of the best parts of the Thanksgiving holiday is waking up to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This event, which attracts approximately 3.5 million attendees in New York per year, plus an additional 50 million viewers across the country who tune in to watch at home, is one of America's most beloved of the year.
One of the things that really makes the parade unique is the huge, helium-filled balloons that are walked down the parade route. The night before the big day, the oversized balloons are inflated on Central Park West while hundreds of people look on. During the parade, the balloons are the first thing people see coming down the street, as they float so high in the air.
Sometimes, however, the balloons are not all that perfect. There have been several instances with the balloons throughout the years that have led to catastrophe. Usually spurred by weather, the balloons have occasionally gone rogue or malfunctioned in some way.
Often times, NBC keeps the accident coverage a secret, but here is a list of the ten worst Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon accidents.
