Born Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra in Fairfield, Connecticut, the girl who would become known as Meg Ryan came from humble beginnings. After graduating from high school in 1979, she moved to New York, attended New York University and majored in journalism. To earn extra money while working on her degree, she went into acting using her new name Meg Ryan. In 1981, she had her big screen debut with a brief appearance as Candice Bergin's daughter in the 1981 drama Rich and Famous. The following year, Ryan landed the role of Betsy Stewart on the CBS daytime drama As the World Turns where she was a main cast member for two years. In 1985, Ryan moved to Hollywood and landed a role on the Western television series Wildside, which also starred another soap alum, J. Eddie Peck, who played Cole Howard on CBS’ The Young and the Restless. Ryan’s small part in the 1986 blockbuster action flick Top Gun led to her being cast in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi adventure comedy Innerspace, where she met her future husband Dennis Quaid. They were married on Valentine’s Day 1991. Since then, Ryan’s roles in numerous romantic comedies like 1989’s When Harry Met Sally…, and 1993’s Sleepless in Seattle have become legendary. Her personal life has been somewhat tumultuous, divorcing Quaid in 2001, with whom she has a son named Jack. Rumors of her having an affair with actor Russell Crowe were splashed all over the tabloids and Ryan’s “good girl” image took a hit. In honor of her 52nd birthday, here is a Top 10 list of Meg Ryan movies.
