Walmart usually doesn’t give personalized responses to Twitter users who are critical of its practices, but when Two and a Half Men actor Ashton Kutcher complains, the company responded. Kutcher began a Twitter war with the retail giant following the news about a Walmart in Ohio that is holding a food drive for its employees.

As previously reported, a Walmart in Canton, Ohio was holding a food drive for its employees and pictures were circulated, causing many to suggest that it is evidence that Walmart isn’t paying its employees enough to live. Of course, the company had its own spin, saying that it was proof that its employees show kindness towards each other.

That wasn’t good enough for Kutcher. “Walmart is your profit margin so important you can't Pay Your Employees enough to be above the poverty line?” Kutcher tweeted Tuesday, including a link to a story on the food drive.

According to Mediate, Walmart’s newsroom Twitter account at first replied to Kutcher with the same canned response they’ve used before. “It’s unfortunate that an act of human kindness has been taken so out of context. We’re proud of our associates in Canton,” that response reads.

Kutcher replied, “@WalmartNewsroom you should be proud of your associates but I’m not sure if they should be proud of you.”

At that point, whoever runs the Walmart account must have realized that they were dealing with an A-list celebrity and actually kept the conversation going. “We know you believe in opportunity like we do & we’d love to talk to you more about it,” the next response read.

Kutcher then sent two more messages in a row: “@WalmartNewsroom you had 17 billion in profits last year. You’re a 260 billion$ company. What are we missing?” and “ @WalmartNewsroom Walmart does a lot of great things but it needs to be a leader on this issue as well.”

WAlmart replied with its own fury of messages. First, the company told Kutcher that he wasn’t paying attention to the fact that most of their employees are making over $25,000 per year and “Also about 75% of our store management teams started as hourly associates & they earn between $50,000 and $170,000 a year on avg.”

“We know we can always get better as a company,” Walmart’s final tweet to Kutcher read. “This year we’ve made providing more opportunities for our associates a top priority.”

Kutcher clearly wasn’t impressed and got the last word. “Walmart should be the leaders not the low water mark,” he wrote, adding a link to a LISR.org story. It is a report on a recent study that found that taxpayers are paying $86 million to help Walmart employees who need government assistance.
