Last Comic Standing, the reality show that pits stand-up comics against each other to find out who is the funniest, has been off the air for three years. However, NBC is going to bring it back, with comedian Wanda Sykes signed to executive produce.
NBC is hoping to launch the show in summer 2014 for its eighth season, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The unscripted program will be part of an overall deal Sykes signed with Universal Television's alternative studio. She will co-produce with Page Hurwitz under their Push It Productions banner. While Sykes is new to the show, Hurwitz worked on it as executive producer from 2006 to 2010.
According to The Los Angeles Times, NBC has not picked a host. Past hosts have included Jay Mohr, Anthony Clark, Bill Bellamy, Fearne Cotton and Craig Robinson.
Sykes is a veteran television performer, appearing on Curb Your Enthusiasm and she had her own shows on Comedy Central and Fox. Her other credits include Ice Age: Continental Drift, The New Adventures of Old Christine and Rio. Certainly, if NBC can’t find a host, she could definitely do it.
NBC has been busy picking up unique programs as of late. The network is bringing back Hollywood Game Night and picked up a Maya Rudolph variety show pilot.
