Hollywood gets to close the book on 2013’s theatrical releases this week. Although we still have a few more Oscar favorites from 2013 that have yet to see wide release, as far as the industry is concerned, it’s time to start looking ahead.

Next year is rather interesting because we will start out by seeing films that were originally slated for 2013, chief among them George Clooney’s The Monuments Men. There is also Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, plus Nicole Kidman’s Grace of Monaco.

The summer season will also still be packed with a mix of comic book movies and sequels, although Fast & Furious 7 was pushed back. Unfortunately, there’s even more set for 2015, so clearly Hollywood is not going away from what works. If it it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

January 2014 is filled with the usual mix of cheap horror movies and films that have been in development too long and just get dumped. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones will give Paramount an idea of how good that franchise can do outside of October, while Lionsgate will try to get people excited for The Legend of Hercules. Lionsgate’s I, Frankenstein and Paramount’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit also open in January.

Now, let’s flashforward to February...

[new page = Monuments Men]

The Monuments Men - George Clooney, Feb. 7

This film was supposed to be out in 2013, but Clooney said that there was still some post-production work to do. Some speculated that the movie may have been pulled by Sony so it would have a better chance at next year’s Oscars, though. Whatever the case, the final product looks like it will be fantastic, featuring an all star cast trying to stop the Nazis from destroying art during WWII.

[new page = Robocop]

Robocop - Jose Padilha, Feb. 12
MGM is mining its catalog for ideas, which has lead to a string of reboots and remakes of its past hits. That includes Robocop. The original film by Paul Verhoeven is still acclaimed to this day as an indictment on America in the 1980s and spawned two sequels. Now, MGM and director Jose Padilha will bring the character back to life with Joel Kinnaman in the title role.

[new page = Muppets Most Wanted]

Muppets Most Wanted - James Bobin, March 21
I liked 2011’s The Muppets because it revived characters that I so dearly wanted to see back on the big screen. It turned out to be a huge hit and Disney’s already got the sequel done. The trailers don’t look that great, so I hope the final product doesn’t turn the Muppets into cliched family movie heros.

[new page = Noah]

Noah - Darren Aronofsky, March 28
Darren Aronofsky hasn’t made a movie since 2009’s Black Swan and he’s never made a big-budget studio movie. It’s going to be fun to see his take on the Noah’s Ark story. Russell Crowe stars in the title role.

[new page = Captain America 2]

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Joe Russo & Anthony Russo, April 4
The first Captain America movie was surprisingly enjoyable, even if it wasn’t the full 1940s war movie throwback I was hoping for. Still, the Russo brothers (who are better known for their TV work - they directed many episodes of Community) have talked about wanting to make a 1970s paranoia thriller. If they can pull that off, The Winter Soldier should be one of the better Marvel movies.

[new page = Transcendence]

Transcendence - Wally Pfister, April 18
This is the new sci-fi film starring Johnny Depp and directed by Wally Pfister. This is Pfister’s first movie as director after years of working with Christopher Nolan. He won an Oscar for shooting Inception.

[new page = The Amazing Spider-Man 2]

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Marc Webb, May 2
The summer movie season for 2014 kicks off with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which will be Sony’s way of introducing the world to more Spider-Man characters. The studio has already hired writers for spin-off movies based on Spidey’s secondary characters.

[new page = Godzilla]

Godzilla - Gareth Edwards, May 16
The most famous lizard in movie history is coming back to life thanks to Warner Bros. and director Gareth Edwards. The human cast includes Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

[new page = X-Men]

X-Men: Days of Future Past - Bryan Singer, May 23
X-Men: First Class revitalized the X-Men franchise after earning rave reviews and rebooting the series as a prequel. However, Fox is bringing back familiar faces from the first three movies and director Bryan Singer to mix the past with the future. There will be so many characters in this movie that you can only hope that it works out.

[new page = Maleficent]

Maleficent - Robert Stromberg, May 30
Angelina Jolie stars as the villain from Sleeping Beauty in disney’s latest attempt to bring its animated classics to life. Alice in Wonderland was a gigantic international success, so Disney has high hopes for this one.
