The Fender Stratocaster that Bob Dylan played at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival has sold for nearly $1 million at auction.
On Friday a buyer agreed to pay $965,000 at Christie’s for Dylan’s iconic guitar, according to NY Daily News. This is the highest price ever paid for a guitar at auction. According to the auction house, the guitar was expected to bring in a lot less than it did, getting a pre-sale estimate of only $300,000-$500,000.
The guitar has been in the possession of a New Jersey family for 50 years after Dylan left it on a plane piloted by Vic Quinto, who worked for Dylan’s manager. When he asked what to do with the guitar no one responded, reported The Guardian. The guitar then went into Quinto’s daughter’s possession, who is the one who auctioned it at Christie’s.
The last record for a guitar sold at auction was Eric Clapton’s Fender which sold at Christie’s for $959,500 in 2004.
