Recipients of the American Film Institute's AFI Awards 2013 were announced on Monday, and among the honorees are 12 Years a Slave, Gravity and Breaking Bad.
These awards for outstanding achievement in film and TV were created to honor productions that advance the art of the moving picture, enhance America’s cultural heritage, mark a memorable moment in time and inspire viewers, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"AFI Awards is a moment for the most accomplished storytellers of 2013 to pause and be appreciated - not as competitors, but as a community," AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said in a statement.
The AFI movies of 2013 include 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Fruitvale Station, Gravity, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, Saving Mr. Banks and The Wolf of Wall Street.
The AFI TV shows of the year include The Americans, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, House of Cards, Mad Men, Masters of Sex, Orange Is the New Black, Scandal and Veep.
Interestingly, buzz-worthy films Blue Jasmine and The Butler didn’t make the cut, and The Walking Dead, Girls and American Horror Story (all TV shows that made the list last year) were excluded as well.
Reuters noted that the AFI Awards are the sole national honor for the creative ensembles in the film and TV industries to be recognized as a whole.
