Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has had back surgery and was placed on injured reserve.

According to ESPN, Romo had received an epidural and other treatments for the herniated disk in his back, but they did not work and he underwent surgery Friday morning. He is officially out for the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Romo sustained the injury in last Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins, but the team did not rule him out as the starter until Friday.

Coach Jason Garret said that his quarterback is very disappointed that he won’t be playing in Sunday’s all important game.

"He's devastated," Garrett said. "He puts a lot into this."

Backup quarterback Kyle Orton will start in Romo’s place. Orton has appeared in just two games this season, and completed only three of five passes, Reuters notes.

Sunday’s showdown is a winner-take-all battle for the NFC East title. The winner will advance to the playoffs and get the No. 3 seed. The Eagles will be ready. Now the Cowboys have to get Orton ready.
