There have been several unique celebrity auctions over the years, but this one may top them all. Trimmings from the beard World Series MVP David Ortiz sported during the series were auctioned off Sunday and went for nearly $11,000.
After the Boston Red Sox won the World Series last month, Ortiz and Shane Victorino both got their beards shaved and collected by Gillette. According to ESPN, the proceeds from the auctions for the trimmings will go to the Movember foundation, which promotes awareness for prostate and testicular cancer by asking men to keep their beards going during November. It was a nice coincidence, since the Red Sox became known for their long beards throughout the season.
Both sets of trimmings were auctioned off on eBay, accompanied by an autograph from each player. Oritz’s trimmings went for $10,877.77 after 132 bids. There were 127 bids for Victorino’s and they went for $3,750.69.
Of course, this isn’t the first time celebrity hair clumps have gone up for sale. A clump of Mick Jagger’s hair went for $6,000 in July and some hair from the late President John F. Kennedy went for $1,800 in October. There was also an auction for Justin Bieber’s hair in 2011.
"I'm smiling bro," Ortiz told ESPN in a text message. "This is great. It has been a year to remember and I'm loving what we just did here. But what really matters most is raising money to fight cancer."
