When Woody Allen was announced as the recipient of the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award in September, many had to wonder if he would actually show up. Although the legendary filmmaker met with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, he will not attend the actually Globes ceremony in January. Instead, the star of many of his greatest films, Diane Keaton, will accept the award on his behalf.
Allen was announced as the latest winner of the HFPA’s lifetime achievement award in September. Although he is one of the most honored filmmakers in history, he has only won two Golden Globes, both coming for his screenplays for The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) and Midnight in Paris (2011). He has won four Oscars and his 2013 film, Blue Jasmine is expected to compete for awards this year.
According to Deadline, the HFPA knew that Allen would not show up when they picked him for the award. So, it was decided to pick Keaton to accept it on his behalf. Allen directed Keaton is several films, including Annie Hall, which won the Best Picture of 1977, and Manhattan. They were also a couple for five years and are still good friends.
Allen is well-known for not attending awards shows. The only Oscars ceremony he ever attended was the 2002 ceremony after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 to represent New York.
The director’s next film is Magic in the Moonlight, which opens next year.
The Golden Globes are set for Jan. 12.
