Actor Ethan Hawke, who is currently married to Ryan Shawhughes and was previously married to Uma Thurman, spoke out against monogamy and people's view towards it, but insists he remains faithful to his wife.
In an interview with Mr. Porter Magazine, said that young people tend to be a bit naive about monogamy. "People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity. 'He's cheated so he's bad, she's cheated so she's bad', as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous."
The Before Sunset star continued, "To act all indignant, that your world has been rocked because your lover wasn't faithful to you, is a little bit like acting rocked that your hair went grey."
Despite his views towards monogamy and how others perceive it, Hawke did add that he is committed to his wife. "My relationship with my present wife is thrilling to me and I'm committed to it. But neither she nor I know what shape the future will come in. Sexual fidelity can't be the whole thing you hang your relationship on."
According to Contact Music, the actor noted, "If you really love somebody you want them to grow, but you don't get to define how that happens. They do."
In the past Hawke has said that he was too young to be marrying Uma Thurman when he was 27, but has since changed his mind 15 years after they divorced. "We tried to be as optimistic as we could be: we all want to believe in love and the possibility of love. The older you get, the more you realized how powerful love is. ... I don't regret marrying early."
Hawke has two daughters, Clementine, 5, and Indiana, 3 with Ryan. He also has a boy, 11-year-old Levon and daughter 15-year-old Maya with Thurman.
