FX has put in a full season order for Tyrant, the new project from Homeland executive producer Howard Gordon. The series will be as focused on tense political situations as Homeland, since it centers on an American family living in a turbulent Middle Eastern country.
FX said today that the show has earned a full season already and will start next year, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Gordon developed the series with Six Feet Under’s Craig Wright and it was created by Gideon Raff. FX CEO John Landgraf has been excited about the show’s promise for months, even saying back in March that the show’s writing team is already set.
The pilot was originally supposed to be the TV directing debut for Oscar winner Ang Lee, but he said he needed a break after Life of Pi and Harry Potter director David Yates took his place. According to Deadline the pilot was shot in Morocco, but the series is expected to move to Tel Aviv going forward.
Tyrant will be produced by Fox 21 and FX Productions with Keshet Broadcasting. Justin Kirk (Weeds) will star, alongside Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan, Ashraf Barhom, Moran Atias, Noah Silver Anne Winters and others.
Landgraf is still excited about the project, saying in a statement, “With Tyrant, Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff and Craig Wright have produced a beautiful television pilot that will be a groundbreaking television series.”
In addition to Homeland and Tyrant, Gordon is also working on TNT’s Legends with Sean Bean and Fox’s 24 miniseries, Live Another Day.
