Warner Bros. and Zach Snyder’s sequel to Man of Steel will have many more DC Comics heroes than just Superman and Batman. Wonder Woman will finally make her big screen debut and will be played by relative newcomer Gal Gadot, the studio said today.
“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe,” Snyder said in a statement. “Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”
According to Deadline, Gadot’s limited resume includes three Fast & Furious films, plus the Tom Cruise film Knight and Day and the comedy Date Night.
Snyder’s film will feature Henry Cavill back as Superman and Ben Affleck starring as Batman. Affleck was first cast in the role in August. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Argo director said that he is enjoying working with Snyder, noting that it’s the director’s job to put a film together and make sense of it all for the audience.
“...At the end of the day, the truth is it’s really directors that make movies work or not — especially these kinds of movies, where it’s about the whole world, and a rising tide lifts all ships,” Affleck said. “And if it all has integrity, if it all has a sense of realism, then it works. And if it doesn’t, than it doesn’t really matter what everyone’s doing [on the screen] because they just look like a bunch of Mexican wrestlers in suits.”
As for Wonder Woman, fans have been hoping for decades that the most well-known female character in the DC Universe would reach the big screen and that will finally come to fruition with Gadot in the role. The CW is also planning to bring back the character for television.
Batman vs. Superman hits theaters on July 17, 2015.
