Jennifer Lawrence has never been shy about her feelings about how women are portrayed in the media and in her latest interview, the Hunger Games star said she believes it should be ‘illegal’ to call a person fat on television.
In a preview clip from her interview with Barbara Walters, the Oscar winning star of Silver Linings Playbook said she couldn’t understand why calling someone fat or insulting anyone is fun.
“I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV,” she said.
Lawrence has often been criticized about her figure, but has always had strong words for those critics. In October, she spoke with Harper’s Bazaar about weight and recalled being told that if she didn’t lose weight, she would be fired. Now that she’s a star though, she is sure it won’t happen again. To anyone who thinks she’s fat, “You can go f--k yourself,” she told the magazine.
In the interview with Walters, Lawrence explained, “I get it, and, and I do it too, we all do it. [But] the media needs to take responsibility for the effect that it has on our younger generation, on these girls who are watching these television shows, and picking up how to talk and how to be cool.”
Lawrence asked Walters why cigarettes and curse words are regulated because they affect children, “ why aren’t we regulating things like calling people fat?”
Lawrence, who can currently be seen in Catching Fire and American Hustle is one of Walters’ Most Fascinating People for 2013. The special airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. on ABC.
