Joe Jonas opened about his life with the Jonas Brothers, working with Disney and his relationship with Demi Lavato while she was struggling with drug abuse. The Jonas brothers were a top selling group consisting of Nick, Joe and Kevin.

The group broke up in late October due to a "disagreement over their music direction."

In this week's issue of New York, Joe Jonas wrote a revealing essay about life as a teen star titled, "My Life as a Jonas Brother."

He reveals that even though he grew up in a religious home with his father being a pastor, he is not religious at all.

"We eventually left our church, Assembly of God, when I was 14. A scandal had erupted involving stolen money, and it caused a big rift in the church. After that the concept of church really upset me for a long time," Jonas says. "I mean, I believe in God, and that’s a personal relationship that I have, but I’m not religious in any way."

They didn't start out as the Jonas Brothers. Their name was J3 but the brothers hated it, so they changed it to the Jonas Brothers after performing at their first concert. When they first started out, people weren't pleased, they were booed and had water bottles thrown at them. Soon, things started to change when they joined Disney. They starred in a show called Jonas and Joe didn't like the show.

"But the thing about the show was that some of the writing on it was terrible. It just ended up being some slapstick humor that only a 10 year old will laugh at."

Disney wanted to make sure they kept their squeaky clean image and they had a meeting with the boys after the Vanessa Hudgens nude photo scandal. They told them that they were proud of them for not making any mistakes like that and that caused a lot of pressure for the young group. They felt that they had to be great role models and keep up their wholesome image.

The promise rings that the boys wore became a big deal in the press. They promised that they will remain virgins for as long as they can. Jonas says that he lost his virginity at 20, even though he had many oppurtunities from fans that used to show up to their hotel rooms while they were on tour.

"I lost my virginity when I was 20. I'm glad I waited for the right person because you look back and go, 'That girl was bat-shi*t crazy.I'm glad I didn't go there.'"

In his relationship with Demi Lovato, he had to deal with her and her addiction to drugs.

"I felt like I needed to take care of her, but at the same time I was living a lie, because I wasn't happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her, because she needed help."

He also reveals the first time he smoked weed.
"The first time I smoked weed was with Demi and Miley(Cyrus). I must have been 17 or 18. They kept saying, 'Try it! Try it!'so I gave it a shot and it was alright. I don't even smoke weed that often anymore."

The Jonas brother breakup was official after they sat down in a meeting. There were lots of yelling because Joe felt that his brothers were just giving up. The group couldn't agree on certain issues so it damaged their relationship. They decided to break up because they didn't want it to affect their family.

"Now that I'm 24 and have control of my life, I'm going back to the drawing board. I've been through a sh*t-ton of stuff, but I'm genuinely excited becuase now I can go back to the studio with those people who I used to work with. I don't have to rely on anyone else's opinion."
