Katie Couric’s syndicated daytime talk show, which was produced and distributed by Disney/ABC Domestic Television, has officially been cancelled. The news is not a complete surprise as it had been reported in October that it was likely to happen.
Katie will come to a conclusion after a big promotional push launched the show in September 2012. The show started off with strong ratings, but then Jeff Zucker, who she worked with on the Today Show, left as executive producer to run CNN. His departure was just the start of a revolving door of executive producers.
Now, according to The New York Times, Disney and couric have confirmed that the show is over.
“We’ve mutually agreed that there will not be a third season of the show,” they said in a joint statement Thursday afternoon. “We’re very proud of everyone’s contributions to making Katie the No. 1 new syndicated talk show of 2012-2013, and we look forward to the rest of the season.”
Couric’s style of interviewing did not gel with the typical daytime talk show, as she preferred to cover more newsworthy stories. Back in October, The Hollywood Reporter first reported that the show was likely to end after its ratings began sinking for the show’s second season. Then, she left ABC News for Yahoo, which made Katie’s cancellation inevitable.
Local networks will likely be pleased by the early decision, since they can get an early start on buying picking programs to replace Couric over the summer and this fall.
