Lady Gaga’s success may be faltering as of late, but the “Applause” singer isn’t showing any signs of taking ARTPOP’s lack of immediate success personally. The singer was in Tokyo Sunday to unveil a life-size doll.
The dolls are available with various flamboyant Gaga costumes, which is appropriate since gaga showed up at the event wearing another outrageous outfit that featured coils around the dress. According to The Associated Press, if a person leans toward the doll, it plays Gaga’s songs and messages.
Gaga said that when her friends heard about her replicas, “they were so excited to take pictures of me with the dolls and then all of a sudden the dolls took over. And the dolls were the most important thing in the room. And this is a beautiful thing.”
The dolls are currently in the prototype stage, so Japanese fans haven’t been able to buy one themselves just yet. They were created in collaboration between several design and industrial teams.
The singer is in Japan for a charity auction that will raise funds for the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. She’s not there to perform, but will be back in the country soon for the ARTPOP tour.
ARTPOP will need a significant tour to help turn around the album’s lackluster sales. It only sold 258,000 copies in its first week, compared to the 1.1 million copies Born This Way started with. In its second week, the album tumbled down to No. 8 on the Billboard 200 album chart with only 46,000 copies sold.
In addition, Gaga’s Thanksgiving special with the Muppets on ABC flopped, drawing just 3.6 million viewers.
