Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf has been suspended for two games for a hit on Boston Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller.
The incident occurred with just over two minutes left in the third period of Sunday’s game. Phaneuf hit Miller in the back near the board in Boson’s zone. Miller then went into the boards face first, left the game and didn’t return, according to USA Today. There was no penalty on the play.Bruins coach Claude Julien said that he's not worried about Miller's condition.
Suspensions seem to be a theme for the Leafs this season. Phaneuf’s suspension is the fifth suspension for a Leafs player this season, according to NHL.com. David Clarkson was suspended for ten games for joining an altercation during the preseason, Phil Kessel got a three game suspension in the preseason for slashing John Scott of the Sabers, and Nazem Kadri was suspended for three games for elbowing Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom. Carter Ashton was suspended two games for boarding Flames forward Derek Smith, according to the Toronto Sun.
Phaneuf will miss the Leafs games on Wednesday and Thursday. He will lose more than $66,000 in salary because of the suspension.
