Melissa Harris-Perry apologized on Tuesday after she mocked former presidential candidate Mitt Romney for taking a family picture where he is holding his adopted black grandchild, Kieran Romney, in his lap.
During a segment on her MSNBC show on Sunday she showed off the family picture, while panelist Pia Glenn mocked, "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just isn't the same," reports Fox News. Harris-Perry then noted that her goal for 2040 would be to get Kieran and Kanye West's newborn Northwest hitched.
Dean Obeidallah, an comedian who was appearing on the show, quipped the picture "really sums up the diversity of the Republican Party, the RNC. At the convention they find the one black person."
According to TIME, Harris-Perry apologized through Twitter after her segment began igniting a media firestorm.
In a series of several tweets that the MSNBC host added the hastag #MHPapology to, Harris-Perry notes that she "meant no offense." She added that she wasn't trying to make fun of transracial families or adoptions and she said she feels "familiarity" with Kieran because she too was a "black child born into a large white Mormon family."
