NBC Universal and Yahoo have reached an agreement to allow live streaming of the 2014 Winter Olympics but fans will have to have a cable or satellite TV subscription to watch most of the live streaming from the games in Russia.
Variety reported that the deal was made in order to drive paid-TV users to utilize NBCOlympcics.com, that is where fans will be able to access the live stream of all Winter Olympic events. There will be no free live stream of the event.
Between NBC and this digital platform, the peacock network will be offering over 1,000 hours of live content while the Olympic Winter Games take place. This is double the coverage that the 2010 Vancouver Olympics provided to fans.
Ken Fuchs, vice president of Yahoo Sports and Games spoke about this unique chance that fans of the Olympics will be given in a statement posted on the Yahoo blog. "For the first time, our audience can watch everything unfold on the live and on-demand NBC Olympics experience from Yahoo," said Fuchs.
The Olympics will be taking place over 18 days starting on Feb. 7th and concluding on Feb. 23rd.
