Although Marvin Hamlisch died in August 2012, the composer is still remembered as one of the best in the business. PBS will pay tribute to his work with a new documentary that premieres Friday.
Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love was produced with the cooperation of Hamlisch’s widow, Terre Blair Hamlisch, and his family. According to Forbes, the documentary was made by Dori Bernstein, who was working on a Broadway production with Hamlisch when he died. She is working on completing the musical, which will be Hamlisch’s final work.
The documentary features interviews with many of Hamlisch’s collaborators, including Barbra Streisand, who sang his Oscar-winning song “The Way We Were.” Carly Simon, Steven Soderbergh, Quincy Jones, Christopher Walken, Sir Tim Rice, Joe Torre, Woody Allen and John Lithgow are among the other celebrities interviewed in the film.
Hamlisch was a member of the elite EGOT club, with four Emmys, four Grammys, three Oscars and a Tony on his resume. His final film score came for Soderbergh’s Behind The Candelabra. He died in August 2012 and age 68.
PBS’ documentary will air as part of the American Masters series and debuts at 9 p.m.
