Peyton Manning broke the NFL touchdown passes record during the Denver Broncos game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Broncos won the game 37-13.
Manning, who had 47 touchdown passes entering Sunday’s game, completed 32 of his 51 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns. In 2004 he had set the record for touchdown passes with 49 touchdown passes. Then came Tom Brady who broke Manning’s initial record in 2007 by throwing 50 touchdown passes. Manning think that Brady will overtake him again at some point.
"I think it's a unique thing and a neat thing to be a part of NFL history, even though it may be temporary," Manning said. "So I'm going to enjoy it as long as it lasts, and hopefully the Hall of Fame will send the ball back once somebody throws for more."
This season Manning has a career-high 5,211 yards passing, which is the third largest and only 265 yards shy of Drew Brees record of 5, 476 which was set in 2011, according to USA Today. He is the first player in the history of the NFL to pass for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in the same season, according to CBS Sports. The record setting pass was to Julius Thomas with about four and a half minutes left in the game.
With the win on Sunday the Broncos clinched their third straight AFC West title and will have a first round bye in the playoffs.
