Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl will not only get a boost from the Super Bowl during a special episode airing after the game, but rock legend Prince will appear as well.
E! News reports that the “Purple Rain” singer will play himself in the episode and will mess up the relationship between Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Deschanel). The site notes that it will be the first time Prince will appear on a TV comedy.
Sources for the site say that Prince is a fan of New Girl, which airs on Fox, the home of the Super Bowl this season. However, reps for Fox have not confirmed the cameo, so they may have been hoping to keep it a surprise.
New Girl is no stranger to music superstars. During the show’s second season finale, Taylor Swift made an appearance, although she didn’t play herself.
The current season of New Girl also featured a guest appearance from Taye Diggs.Damon Wayans Jr. also returned to the show and will stay on for the rest of the season.
After the Super Bowl on Feb. 2, Fox will air New Girl, followed by a new episode of the freshman Andy Samberg show Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Prince also has another connection to the Super Bowl. He performed the halftime show back in 2007.
