New Year's Eve is a chance to reflect on the past and make resolutions for the future. One of the people welcoming in the best for 2014 will be Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, as she presses the crystal button at the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square.
Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor isn't the first political figure to lead the countdown. According to the Washington Post, previous button-pushers have included Kofi Annan, Hillary Clinton, and Colin Powell.
Originally from the Bronx, Justice Sotomayor is the first Latina to become a Supreme Court Judge. In 2010, they named the Bronxdale Houses Development where Judge Sotomayor grew up the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Houses. Judge Sotomayor graduated from Yale Law School and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009.
According to The New York Times, Justice Sotomayor is the first Supreme Court Justice to lead the celebration in Times Square. Throughout her career, she has overcome adversity and encouraged others to "dream big".
Every year in New York, over one million people crowd Times Square to bring in the New Year. The event is telecast to over a billion people worldwide.
