Susan Boyle reveals that she has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome.
BBC News reported that the singer stated that she had been misdiagnosed since birth; she was told that she had brain damage.
Boyle became a sensation on the show British Got Talent in 2009 surprising the harsh judge Simon Cowell, who did not think much of her based on her appearance.
The singer spoke to the British Newspaper The Observer about her diagnosis.
CNN reported that Boyle went to a specialist in Scotland because she believed something more was going on with her.
“I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label. "Now I have a clearer understanding of what's wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself,” she said.
According to NIH.gov, Asperger’s syndrome is a form of autism and is characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
The 52-year-old singer said that having Asperger’s syndrome will not affect her life any differently, “It will not make any difference to my life. It's just a condition that I have to live with and work through.”
However, she does believe that people will understand her better now, “I think people will treat me better because they will have a much greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do."
