Target has revealed that anyone to have purchased items from their store between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15., may have been affected by a data breach.
Target Corp. said that approximately 40 million customers who used credit or debit cards in that time have the possibility of being affected. The first to report the news was Brian Kreb, a computer security journalist and former Washington Post reporter. He said the breach could’ve started around Black Friday and continued from there.
AP notes the Minneapolis-based company urged anyone who bought something at their U.S. stores during that time period should call 866-852-8680 if they suspect any illegal activity on their credit cards.
The retail giant said they have teamed up with a forensics firm to find out more about the breach and CNN reported the Secret Service confirmed they are investigating the situation as well.
“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” they said in a statement, Star Tribune reports.
There are nearly 1,800 Target stores in the U.S.
