It was no wonder that Oxford Dictionary declared “selfie” the word of the year in 2013. Everyone is posting pictures of themselves to Instagram and Twitter these days, and famous stars are no exception. From the constant shots of Kim Kardashian blowing up our Instagram feeds to tattoo pictures to rockin’ beach bods, celebrities have flaunted it all.
Despite being plastered all over magazines and the Internet by paparazzi, celebrities still love to add to the collection. We are no strangers to Justin Bieber’s shirtless selfies, pouting at the camera, or cute shots of Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy. Whether they are backstage at a concert, in their bedroom, or in a tropical destination, our favorite stars keep us updated on nearly everything they are doing.
Some celebs have mastered the “selfie” better than others, but hey, it takes practice. Kim Kardashian has over a thousand Instagram posts, and Justin Bieber has twelve million followers. 10. The year 2013 was a great one for Taylor Swift, who won various awards and performed at a multitude of different venues, including the CMAs, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and the Grammy’s. Taylor Swift also bought a mansion in Rhode Island in 2013, and she recently celebrated her 24th birthday in Melbourne with up-and-coming singer Lorde. Taylor documented her year with many pictures over the months, but one of our favorites is her selfie with her Grammy award after winning Best Song Written for Visual Media for "Safe and Sound." Taylor Swift captioned the snapshot, "Look what happened. :)"

9. In February, Rebel Wilson uploaded a shot of herself and Anne Hathaway, both flashing toothy grins at the Critics Choice Awards. Rebel was over the moon as she met her hero Anne Hathaway, and she couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures with the Les Miserables star. Rebel describes Anne as her “big screen idol,” and she uploaded the duo’s selfie to Instagram with the caption, “At Critic's Choice Awards tonight with the beautimous #AnneHathaway. X.” Over the past couple years, Rebel has appeared in many films, including Bridesmaids, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, and Pitch Perfect. Wilson’s charisma and humor on the big screen led to a hosting at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. Despite all over her amazing accomplishments this year and in the past few years, we’re willing to bet that Rebel’s highlight of 2013 was her quick pic with her idol, Anne Hathaway.

8. On January 21, 2013, President Obama’s two daughters, Malia and Sasha, almost stole the show at the Presidential Inaugural Parade by snapping some hilarious selfies. Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12, had their own fun at their father’s Inaugural Parade by taking personal photos with their iPhones. Malia posed with a peace sign, while Sasha made a sassy face at the camera. The girls spent the day snapping pictures of their parents, photo-bombing each other’s pictures, and even breaking out a few dance moves. The girls’ down-to-earth actions had viewers buzzing and the sisters nearly stole the show from the President of the United States!

7. For Halloween this year, Miley Cyrus decided to channel her inner Lil’ Kim, circa 1999. This has been the year for Miley, drawing extreme controversy and fame throughout 2013, specifically for her VMA performance with Robin Thicke. Miley has twerked her way to great heights, and she is no stranger to criticism. One of Miley’s best selfies of the year was her over-the-top Halloween costume that left little to the imagination. The now-21-year-old singer dressed up as Lil’ Kim in a half-topless purple jumpsuit from the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, complete with a purple wig. The ensemble completely exposed Miley’s right breast, which was covered only by a purple sticker. The singer attended Adam Lambert’s Halloween for Charity party and spent the night dancing and singing. Miley Cyrus captioned her Instagram selfie, “Happy Halllllloweeeen,” with a series of hearts, and she even got the stamp of approval from her pal, Lil’ Kim.

6. Beyoncé shocked the world last week when she debuted a self-titled fifth solo album on iTunes with no warning. The album included 14 finished tracks and 17 music videos to go along with them, and more than 80,000 people bought the album within three hours of its release. Beyoncé can certainly be considered one of the greatest artists of the year, and 2013 was a great year for her. She spent time with her one-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, and her husband, Jay-Z. Beyoncé’s Instagram feed is full of pictures of the two, but it is plastered with selfies of the famous Queen Bey. In August, Beyoncé debuted a short new pixie cut to her followers, which was met with mixed results. The 31-year-old posted photos on Instagram on August 7th, showing herself looking in a mirror and touching her new ‘do. Beyoncé certainly has the face structure, confidence, and beauty to pull off this short look, and we think it was one of her greatest selfies of the year. 5. Justin Bieber could certainly be considered the “King” of selfies, uploading an absurd amount of pictures of himself to Instagram to please his many “Beliebers.” Many of his shots emphasize his growing collection of tattoos, or feature himself shirtless, frowning his signature pout. Although we are not a huge fan of the multiple, half nude selfies, one of our favorite shots of Bieber this year was his picture of him and “Uncle Will.” Bieber’s post in August has recently been revealed to be the most liked picture on Instagram in 2013. As of December 12, the picture has received 1,496,070 likes, the most of any photo in 2013. The 19-year-old singer, who has 12 million followers on Instagram, is wearing a simple white T-shirt, gold chain and hat in the photo, as he poses with Will Smith. Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom noted how there are millions of photos shared every day, but Bieber’s photo with Smith garnered the most likes of 2013.

4. Nick Jonas surprised many fans when he posted a shirtless selfie on Instagram, captioned, “I never do this but... Healthy living and fitness update. Post workout picture.” The picture showed off his fit upper body and great abdomen. The 20-year-old singer surprised Jonas Brother fans and non-fans alike when he showed everyone what he’s been hiding underneath his shirt. The photo has more than 293,000 likes on Instagram, and even celebrities were swooning over his washboard abs. Nick explained that he didn’t share the shot on a whim; he wanted to give some inspiration to others with diabetes who were trying to stay in shape. Although Nick says he won’t be sharing many more photos like this one, there are plenty of love scenes with co-star Isabel Lucas in his movie, “Careful What You Wish For.”

3. One of the most anticipated babies of 2013 was Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter, North, born in June of this year. In a decision unlike we are used to from Kim, the couple decided not to sell photos to magazines of their new baby. There were offers for up to $3 million for first access to pictures of Baby North, but the new parents rejected all offers. Instead, Kanye revealed the photo of Nori on Kris Jenner’s talk show, and Kim took to Instagram to debut her baby. Kim’s sisters also uploaded the same picture of Kimye’s baby, and the photo received a huge amount of buzz. The baby is looking straight into the camera, and the photo simply reads, “NORTH.” The photo has received almost 1.5 million likes since it was posted in August, and it is one of the most talked about photos of the year. Whether or not you like the Kardashian Klan, you have to admit that North is one cute baby.

2. The world mourned the death of Nelson Mandela on December 5, 2013, and Oprah Winfrey was among those who attended the funeral in Qunu, South Africa. Oprah spent a lot of time with Mandela, and she was invited to his home in Qunu, where they shared ten days and night and had twenty-nine meals together. Her favorite memory of Mandela was when he came to Chicago to appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2000. Oprah says that she has never met, read, or heard of another human being quite like Nelson Mandela, and to try to even emulate a piece of Mandela would make everyone better human beings. The knows that the world is going to miss him, and she took to Instagram to share her grief. She posted a picture of herself and Mandela, with a caption that read, “One of the great honors of my life was to be invited to Nelson Mandela's home, spend private time and get to know him. He was everything you've ever heard and more – humble and unscathed by bitterness. And he always loved to tell a good joke. Being in his presence was like sitting with grace and majesty at the same time. He will always be my hero. His life was a gift to us all.” The photo of the two hugging and smiling shows their true bond, and the great connection Mandela had with everyone he met.

1. Kim Kardashian has already been featured on this list, but the Queen of Selfies, with over one thousand posts and 11.8 million followers on Instagram is hard to ignore. Other than her baby photos of North posted over the past couple of months, one of her pictures that created the most buzz was a selfie of her post-baby body in a white swimsuit. Kim shared her most revealing, sexiest post-baby body picture in October, four months after the birth of her daughter. Holding her iPhone and posing in the mirror, the E! star gives a sexy glance in a revealing one-piece that shows off her world-famous behind and a large amount of cleavage. On The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Kim revealed to Jay that she is fifty pounds slimmer with the help of exercise and the Atkins diet. Kim described the selfie as her “big middle finger to the world” on everyone who called her fat. We have to admire Kim’s confidence, and she truly does look in great shape after only four months after giving birth. While we can get sick of all the selfies Kim takes to posting on social media sites, it’s nice to see her feeling great about her new body and loving motherhood.
