HBO executives gave word that Aaron Sorkin’s popular drama, The Newsroom, will begin its third and final season.

Newsroom is set at an idealistic version of a cable news network, and ended season two last summer in July. Whether season three would happen was yet to be seen. Finally, the deal was confirmed.

HBO’s programming president Michael Lombardo said that he would be quite surprised if the series didn’t return. The series had been known to boast an elite viewership. During an interview last Spring, Lombardo told The Hollywood Reporter, "It felt like the show was hitting a smart, adult audience that many of our dramas weren't."

Newsroom features Emily Mortimer, Law and Order veteran Sam Waterston, and Emmy Award winner Jeff Daniels. Daniels was praised in 2013 for his portrayal as Will McAvoy.

Newsroom is the creation of Aaron Sorkin. This season, Sorkin will be sharing his role as executive producer with Alan Poul and Scott Rudin. According to Variety, Sorkin has been working on a number of projects, including Sony’s biopic about Steve Jobs.
