Mady and Cara Gosselin, the 13-year-old twin daughters of Jon and Kate Gosselin, are speaking out on their own for the first time since appearing with their 9-year-old sextuplet siblings Aaden, Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Joel and Leah on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8.
The twins have essentially grown up on camera with their siblings and they’ve seen their parents’ marriage unravel before their eyes - but the teenagers want to set the record straight – they’re not “damaged” in any way.
"People expect us to be damaged," Cara told People’s cover story. Mady added, "People think we're supposed to be messed up, like, 'Oooooh, the poor Gosselin kids, they're going to be scarred for life, waaaaah.' Here's the big news: we're not messed up."
This is different than what their father told Oprah Winfrey recently, that, “developmentally, they have problems with their peers, and they have problems with talking to other people, and they have problems with wants and needs and manners and morals and what's right and what's wrong. I think more so than someone who grows up off TV."
Like any 13-year-old girl would say, the twins called their mom “annoying” in the interview, but by the end Cara is quick to say "Honestly? Our mom is the best."
It doesn’t seem that they have the same sentiment for their father, with Mady saying "Actually the stuff I remember now is stuff I really didn't see anything wrong with at the time ... but now that I look back, I can see, 'Oh that wasn't really a good thing.' Like girlfriends. Lots of girlfriends. Like maybe that wasn't so normal to have someone new, like, every week." Cara added, "Everyday. Every minute. Every second."
