CBS said today that it will air the Hollywood Film Awards, an event that takes place in October and has never previously been broadcast. The event was founded by Carlos de Abreu and will be produced by Dick Clark Productions.
“The Hollywood Film Awards is a star-filled, fun night full of surprises, and the first stop out of the gate kicking off the film awards season,” Jack Sussman, Executive Vice President, Specials, Music and Live Events, CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. “Until now, the event was limited to only industry insiders. We're proud to team up with dick clark productions and Carlos to develop this into an event for television and showcase it to millions of viewers across the country.”
The Hollywood Film Awards started in 1997 and is essentially a pre-party before the awards season. Even though no nominees are announced and the winners are picked by Abreu and his team, stars still come out to pick up their awards. During this year’s ceremony, director Garry Marshall even joked about how he hadn’t seen August: Osage County yet when he presented the film’s cast with the ensemble cast award.
Every star who won in October attended and Kanye West even attended just hours before he proposed to Kim Kardashian. West presented 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen an award.
The top award of 2013 went to Star Trek Into Darkness. Sandra Bullock, Harrison Ford, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto also won awards.
CBS doesn’t have the Oscars or the Golden Globes, but did have the People’s Choice Awards last night and will air the Grammys later this month.
