New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter returned to the field on Monday after an injury-plagued 2013 season,as he started preparing for the 2014 season.
Jeter broke his left ankle during the American League championship series against Detroit in 2012. He missed the first 91 games of last year and played in only 17 games. Last year he hit .190 with one homerun and seven RBI’s, according to the Associated Press. In thirteen games he played shortstop, the other four games he was the designated hitter.
"It's good to have a normal offseason and get some work in"Jeter said. "Everything is normal now."
Jeter hit off a tee in the batting cage and fielded 108 ground balls at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa, Florida on Monday, according to MLB.com. He usually begins preparations for the new season in January to prepare for spring training. Yankees pitchers, catchers, and injured players will begin working out on February 15. The rest of the team will begin on February 20.
According to CBS Sports, the Yankees could be getting ready to have Jeter spent a lot of time at DH this season. Earlier this offseason they signed Brendan Ryan. They also have Eduardo Nunez and Dean Anna on their roster who could see some playing time. It will be interesting to see if Jeter will be a DH this year, and if he is then the question will be how long he will be a DH.
