HBO's adaptation of Larry Kramer's play The Normal Heart doesn't premiere on the subscription network until May, but a sequel might not be too far behind.
According to Deadline, who first reported the sequel possibility, says that Ryan Murphy, who directed the first, would return for the sequel. Normal Heart's cast of Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo and Jim Parsons also would likely return.
In addition, it sounds like those who produced the film, Jason Blum, Dede Gardner, Dante Di Loreto, Kramer and Murphy also would be interested in helping on the sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Normal Heart was shown to the Television Critics Association on Thursday and Murphy said the movie/play's themes are still prevalent today, due to the fight to legalize same-sex marriage.
The Normal Heart is about when HIV/AIDS first hit New York City in the early 1980s and looks at how gay activists and the medical community tried to explain the truth about the disease, rather than the misconception everyone had about it during the time.
"Larry wrote that play with the idea that silence does equal death," Murphy said. "When people were writing about it, there were no solutions. It ends in '84, but what it's about feels modern to me with gay marriage in the news and people fighting to be loved and accepted for who they are."
