The Newsroom has been renewed for a third and final season, likely to air this fall, by HBO.
The renewal was delayed by creator Aaron Sorkin, who was busy writing the screenplay for the Steve Jobs film Jobs, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The show has managed decent ratings for both seasons, with the second improving to an average of 2.2 million viewers.
True Blood and Boardwalk Empire also will be ending their series' run this fall, giving way to new programs in the works, including Silicon Valley and The Leftovers.
The renewal isn't especially surprising as HBO programming president Michael Lombardo previously said he would be "shocked" if the show didn't return and the primary cast, including Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston and Alison Pill, signed new deals in the fall.
According to Deadline, executive producers and showrunners Paul Lieberstein and Sorkin are reportedly already beginning to work on stories to include in the final season.
"The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin - smart, riveting and thought-provoking," Lombardo said. "I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember."
