Musician Eddie Van Halen and daytime talk show host Ellen Degeneres celebrate their birthdays Sunday, January 26th.

Eddie Van Halen, 59

Songwriter, musician, and producer Eddie Van Halen turns 59 today. The band “Van Halen” was founded in 1972 consisting of Eddie and Alex Van Halen alongside David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony. The rock band released its first album, Van Halen in 1978. The album sold over 10 million copies nationwide in 20 years. Their 1984 album saw the most success, selling over 12 million copies in its first year. The hit single “Jump” landed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list.

After a four year break from music, the band came together in 2004 to release a new album, The Best of Both Worlds. In 2007, Van Halen was welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band took another brief break from their tour in 2012, when Eddie Van Halen went through surgery for diverticulitis.
Apart from the band, Eddie Van Halen has worked with other artists such as Queen, Michael Jackson, and LL Cool J. He was on Saturday Night Live as a guest musician in 1987, and in made a cameo appearance on Two and a Half Men in 2008.

Ellen DeGeneres, 56

Comedian, actress, and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres turns 56 today. Her daytime talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show started its run in 2003. The show has garnered 13 Emmy wins in categories including Outstanding Talk Show, Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment, Outstanding Special Class Writing, and Outstanding Talk Show Host. As a talk show host, Ellen is known for dancing with her audience members and pranking many of her guests.

Aside from her talk show, DeGeneres has appeared on several other television shows including Roseanne, Will & Grace, and her former shows Ellen and The Ellen Show. She spent one season as a judge on the popular contest show American Idol. DeGeneres has appeared on the big screen several times in films including Conehoeads, Dr. Dolittle, The Love Letter and Finding Nemo. This year, she will be one of the narrators in the Shaun Monson documentary Unity. In 2016, she will reprise her role as Dory in the Pixar sequel Finding Dory.

On March 2, DeGeneres will host the 86th annual Academy Awards. This will be her second time hosting the Oscars.
