Jay Cutler signed a new seven-year contract with the Chicago Bears, who wrapped up their star quarterback before he has a chance to test free agency waters this offseason.
The re-signing comes on the heels of a season where Cutler missed five games after suffering groin and ankle injuries and the team just missed out on the playoffs, reports USA Today. In addition, the team also signed contracts with guard Matt Slauson and cornerback Tim Jennings.
On Monday, Cutler had mentioned both sides were going to sit down at the negotiating table noting, "We'll find equal ground. We'll get it worked out."
According to ESPN, terms of the deal have not yet been released, but it's assumed that the contract will likely be higher than the recent contract the Detroit Lions gave Matthew Stafford during last offseason.
General Manager Phil Emery spoke of Cutler, saying, "He's a demonstrated winner with the Chicago Bears. He can be a key player in terms of being the reason you win." He also noted that despite being injured and sitting out for awhile, Cutler remained there for the team, providing "leadership" as the Bears tried to survive with backup quarterback Josh McCown in his place.
On the season, Cutler averaged a career-high passer rating of 89.2, with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while throwing for 2,621 yards.
